PHGD: Post Hunger games Depression.
WARNING! SPOILER ALERT! IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK STOP HERE!
In the words of Marvin the Robot; I'm depressed. If you've been under a rock in northern Maine then you may not know about "The Hunger Games" I doubt you have the internet though, so you aren't going to see this... awkward. Well this book trilogy called the hunger games is really good. the books themselves are good, the story is good. However, I feel that the trilogy has been used as a way to shove a message that is painful to swallow into the throats of readers. I won't go over the story cause if you haven't read it, you should read this.
In book 1: the hunger games we have a young strong female lead, she knows who she is. A survivor. Katniss has to fight gladiator style with 23 other CHILDREN. I think this is something that is sadly over looked by a lot of people. In america we are use to images of war, we see it on TV, we hear it in the news, we even live it out in games. We never see the death of children or teens. It's a taboo, It's all around us but we refuse to understand. Just like in the games, It's hard for me to see Katniss as someone younger then myself. At sixteen she is forced to kill other human children for the enjoyment of the Capital.
In book 2: Catching Fire Katniss find out just how explosive a combination hate and hope are. despite her best efforts every word she says leads to more discontent among the districts. People that have been slaves of the capital for a whole generation are doing the same thing every single people group has done under a dictatorship. Rebelled.
In book 3: Mockingjay: is where Suzanne Collins snaps us up in the trap she's been weaving. It is my belief that the hunger games were written to attack this point. Now a friend I met at the Tour de nerdfighteria, Francisco made an amazing video about how he felt the Mockingjay wronged the story Suzanne had been writing for two book. I however, feel the opposite. I feel that Mockingjay is the realization of why the past two book were created. Mockingjay is war. pure, unadulterated war.
It is a painfully real painting. Sure, Katniss spends most of the book in tear and closets. Name one person that you know that could have been through two set of games, killed dozens of people, started a rebellion that may destroy Panem, and lost the one person that can comfort you because of a stupid mistake and kept themselves together. she isn't even of age... That is Katniss though, She does things. She is incredibly strong and powerful, but they took a phoenix and put her underground. when she goes to 8 and 2 she does amazingly. even the capital invasion!
Then comes Peeta, I think the old Peeta did die. He died and stayed that way. I don't think we can do much about that. He will never be the same, no one can be that broken and be put back together the same way.
Gale was a hero, but war changes people. Is it gales fault that Prim died? No, even if he created the bombs he didn't drop them nor did he know they were going to be dropped. much less on children. So for him to leave like he did is understandable. Prim was as much family to gale as his siblings I think.
So that was a lot about the main characters, Now the main idea. We all would have loved a peaceful ending. Peeta to get better, Katniss to never have a nightmare, Finnick and Annie to love happily ever after. This is a real war, people die. They don't go in slow motion, there is no time to mourn or cover them with flowers. In an instant life ends. Which is depressing. I'm not upset about the hunger games ended or even how they ended. I see them as a call to arms. If you were wondering, we are the citizens of the Capital. We sit and yes we have to work but we don't have guns to our heads. we don't actively stop the madness around us.
I'm depressed because I'm part of the thing I hate and It's time to change that.
