Medic Vs. Door, door won.

Image
So I've decided I'm not meant to work a 1000-2200 shift. They just end badly. The first one I went off road in a truck, the second I had a close encounter with lice, the third I spent almost 3 hours in the ER when my medic closed AND LATCHED the side ambulance door on her finger... Nether of us could figure out how her finger actually got in the door. I got pictures of the stitches after but not before for her sake. She broke off the joint capsule of her right index (luckily she's left handed) and needed 9 stitches!

Essay for Advance-EMT class

I sat in the ER watching the nurses and doctors work when shouts for help were heard from the hall. I jumped up with everyone else and ran to the hall. Down the hall a nurse was pushing a man in a wheelchair. His feet dragging, his head rolled back as he gasped for breath. In what felt like seconds the man was moved from the hall to the trauma room and on to the bed. I watch from the hall as the nurses hurry to start IVs and EKGs. I know I could be a part of that flurry of activity if I knew what do. I could have set up the 12-lead and understood what the ST elevation meant. I could have started that IV he needed for life saving fluids and medication.  As a basic the most valuable thing I've learned and the thing pounded into me by almost every medic I've worked with is that I know almost nothing. I am still a baby in EMS, and I want to grow up. I want to work with a medic and have them be confident that I can do all of the basic life support needs of our patient and then star

married for a full week!

So this post is mostly going to be pictures from our Honeymoon/Vacation, We went up to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor for the week. We stayed on the "quiet side" in Southwest Harbor. It was nice to have a solid week away after we've been working so much and planning the wedding. I'm sure I'll post wedding pictures when we get them.  The Cottage we stayed at all week. The car guardian was happy to go to Acadia too! Please don't try to watch the whole park loop now. It's 30 minutes long! but our random commentary is always nice to listen to! Rated PG-13 for language! So we had a great week! We're home now and working on getting our Apartment in living order, Writing thank you cards for the multitude of gifts we got from everyone, and continuing to "get married." Only 79 years and 51 weeks to go!

THE EMS APP

So myself and a fellow redditor Irunongames  have started working on a mobile electronic Patient care report app, but we want it to be much, much more then that. It works for Pt transfers and Pt charts, the end result is a serious under taking but would be awesome if it worked. So for now give us some feed back! Loading...

getting nerdy in EMS...

So I live in a state fortunate enough to have digital run reports (I'm sure some angry old medics are just waiting to troll me right now.) However, I don't see a point at the moment. I don't see why the local ER's are using EMR ether. I mean it would be really cool if we actually utilized it ... Unfortunately we don't. everyday medic have to print out their report using 2-5 pages of paper, then they fax it to the ER using another  2-5 pages of paper! That doesn't include the 2 page quick report we have to leave the hospital. Then we have cardiac monitors to worry about! those things will spit out 2-3 feet of readings if you don't watch them.  I do a lot of patient transfers at the moment. (It isn't all that fun but it pays the bills and that's good enough for now.) When you do a transfer especially a Phych transfer you always need three things. The Patient, hardest one to forget. However sometimes they don't wanna go and try to run the othe

I gone, done, did it now!

Well, not really. I deleted my Facebook. I got hacked and was posting spam, so i killed it! now I'm just posting to Google+, Twitter, and Tumblr. I can't access Tumblr at work though. Which is were I spend most of my waking hours. I'm looking for people to follow/follow me on Google+ and twitter. If you want me to follow you or add you to a circle just comment with a username! I recently started following this guy on twitter and he's freaking hilarious. He's made the #DearPatient tag awesome. # DearPatient   You lie to me, you get prescriptions for placebos. Do it again, you get Ipecac. And a Narcan Patch. Troll.  ~ RealEDdoc In other news, It's shark week on discovery! and Philip DeFranco is hosting! Go internet! Well, That's all I got... Moving in: day 2 and 3. Described completely by memes.

Starting out the day. Moving a full size bed up a narrow set of stairs, around a corner, out the door on a op of the van get to rigged to the top, driven a mile down the road, carried up another set of stair, another tight corner and finally to the bed room... Before: After: Realizing we aren't even close to done. Well, we aren't really done yet. But.... we're close enough to live in it!

Moving in: Day 1.

So Eliza and I just signed the lease for our new apartment! We've started slowing migrating our stuff there. At the moment we have about five laundry baskets, a little table, a magic bullet and a kitchen-aid mixer... that's it. We are planning a "BIG" move for Saturday. I've gotta talk to a few people about borrowing trucks to move a couch, bed, and dresser. After that we should be moved in! now I have to go write a list of people that need to get notified of my address change. The list is quickly getting longer now that I've got a job, licenses, and other misc. issues. Here's some phone pictures.

600 hours in.

it's now coming to the end of July. I've put in over 600 hundred hours for delta since mid may. I've been talking to the medics about skills and assessment. I've been getting my fare share of hands on practice moving Pts, dealing with issues, paperwork, documentation. All that fun stuff. So now I've got to start trying to get cleared for ALS.  Now, I know HIPPA is a legit thing so I can't talk about patients. However. I do know I'm not gaining or refining skills bringing people to alcohol detox. Don't get me wrong. I love my job! Even if it's something stupid I'm still helping people a hell of a lot more then selling donuts and coffee. However, the basic truck is getting monotonous . I am gonna shoot for just one ALS shift every so often like one every week or two, but I honestly think I'm ready. Am I? No. Its just like driving. It doesn't matter how long you study or how many times you talk about it, all that matters is what you do behin

60 Hours a week.

Hello. My name is Nicholas. I work for a private Ambulance. Now that I am fully oriented I work 60 hrs a week. I couldn't be happier, or more tired. I'm making major bank. ------------------------------------------      Anyways.... So I'm working Delta for real now and It's both fun and tiring. I'm working nights on the BLS truck, I get to take care of your sweet hearted granny!..... And your crazy ass uncle that's a Vietnam vet... so it's a fair trade. After a week I was on Reddit EMS  and they had a good post about gear guys carry. pretty standard info. Good stethoscope, trauma shears, pen. well  I have all of those... but it's a lot to keep in your pockets and when you're trying to catch a quick nap  it sucks to have shears stabbing your quad. So I went and ordered a molle drop leg with some pouches. I'll see how it goes and post pics and such when I get everything in and running.      Now I know I should take some pictures and s

Adventures in Hobbit Land!

Image
On Instagram this weekend I posted this picture with the caption "Sometimes I wonder why I stay in Maine. Then I go for a walk in the woods." I spend countless hours in "Hobbit Land" as it's been called for generations now. It's actual name is Vaughn's woods, but it far more fun to look for the chairs and homes of Hobbits then to look for Vaughn... Growing up my Mum always took my sister and I (and whatever friends we had with us) through what I thought until this weekend to be the only trail through Hobbit land. As my fiancee and I walked into the woods; instead of walking straight forward like I always had I looked behind us and saw another trail that I had never seen before... Of course curiosity got the best of me and I had to try this new mysterious trail... Here is a map thanks to " my tracks " View 4/28/2012 6:39 PM in a larger map As you can see I didn't think to start my track until after we started walking this ne

Welcome to Delta

Finally.      After over a year of waiting I'm officially working for an Ambulance service.  I'm now a proud Employee of Delta Ambulance. At least that's what my badge says.      So I've spent the last two full days getting "Oriented" to the new job. Also known as filing out a tree worth of paper, having every Ofiice/Important person introduce themselves, tell us what they do and how you can call them 24/7/365.      It wasn't the most fun thing in the world but it was informational and helpful to meet my fellow N00Bs. I'm also glad to get a chance to talk with some of the EMTs and Medics that have been working for Delta for up to TWENTY years! That's a friggin long time...    I actually start my "Ride Time" or basically a beginner test to see if I'm up to snuff on technique and get me familiar with the area. To be painfully honest... I'm stupid nervous. I know the technical skillz, but half of them I've never done

Dear Canada, I'm sorry. You have clearly proven yourself to be smarter then the USA, first with the death of the penny and now with this brilliant digital money. thank you.

PHGD: Post Hunger games Depression.

WARNING! SPOILER ALERT! IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK STOP HERE! In the words of Marvin the Robot; I'm depressed. If you've been under a rock in northern Maine then you may not know about "The Hunger Games" I doubt you have the internet though, so you aren't going to see this... awkward. Well this book trilogy called the hunger games is really good. the books themselves are good, the story is good. However, I feel that the trilogy has been used as a way to shove a message that is painful to swallow into the throats of readers. I won't go over the story cause if you haven't read it, you should read this. In book 1: the hunger games we have a young strong female lead, she knows who she is. A survivor. Katniss has to fight gladiator style with 23 other CHILDREN. I think this is something that is sadly over looked by a lot of people. In america we are use to images of war, we see it on TV, we hear it in the news, we even live it out in games. We never

The Hat of creativity/giraffen battle helm!

First thing you should know is that I'm between pretty and very sick right now. so any craziness beyond normal is to be expected. I am sitting at Tim Horton's right now cause I don't really wanna walk home. *I actually look and feel like fecal matter. Nope, Sorry, that isn't actually an animal skinned sex god. It's just me and my Hat. While I understand how difficult it can be for you, my loving readers not to try and jump me when I look so delicious.* It's best for both of us if you fight your primal urges. I mean with so many of you and only one of masculine, young, fit me. It would be a certain slaughter. Anyways! let us move on to my magical hat, it's a wonderful thing really. having a hat that is designed to create and destroy. Such a hat could earn a entire blog about it's self one day. (#NotReally) Let us talk about creative stuff I've been doing! First off, I've been slowly learning the Ocarina using an Ocarina app for android .

Ocarina for all time!

Image
Heyyyyy Ocarina! Okay, Maybe that's not quite right... It says what I need though! So yea, I was stumbling around the internet and found something incredibly awesome. An Ocarina app for Iphone, of course the first thing I do is down load the  android version  and I've been playing away ever since! Now, there are limits! it is only a 4 hole ocarina, but it's enough to have fun with. I've been playing with it and reading about them and now I'm getting serious about buying one and learning to play it. A real 12 hole, tenor or bass. So, instead of studying for SAT's or something, I'm playing the digital ocarina on my phone.... First off, watch the above clip... It may not be the same for you, but that 4 note whistle almost reduces me to tears... ridiculous. I know, but Rue is an amazing character! Rue's death is what really made me think about the atrocities being committed against children that are a full generation away from the rebellion that caused

Date day! YAY!

Image
Please be prepared for a torrent of pictures... Okay, So it's Saturday again and every Saturday me and my wonderful fiancee go on a day long date. It's a ritual that's been around for quite a while now. So here, Is what we do. Most of the time we start out getting breakfast at AHOP, or Tim Horton's, then after much deliberation, be choose the same basic place. The Beach. Popham fort to be exact. Nothing like a good panoramic shot  It'z a very nice, ya? ya. So we go for a nice walk on the beach, then we find things like this... I really have no idea what this big pipe thing is for... We figured, whale back scratcher, Japanese submarine, Pirate telescope, That's it really... ANYWAYS! Then we went over to the big drift wood to see if the whole i made from jumping (OVER TEN FEET!)  was still there. It wasn't. but it is an excellent photo area, for things like this... Notice the intense unwavering stare, the muscle rigidity, the inc
